Active Engagement
Active engagement is when a prospect or user takes an intentional action — reply, click, demo request, in-app feature use — that signals genuine interest beyond a passive open.
What is active engagement?
Active engagement is a buying or product signal that requires the prospect to do something: reply to an email, click a tracked link, book a meeting, comment on a post, fill a form, or use a specific feature. It's the opposite of a passive signal like an open (which Apple Mail Privacy Protection has rendered nearly meaningless since 2021).
Why it matters in 2026
- Open rates are unreliable — pixel-blocking and AI summarizers inflate them
- Reply rate, click rate, and meeting-booked rate are the metrics that actually predict pipeline
- Active engagement is what AI scoring models weight most when ranking which leads an AE should call next
Examples in outbound
- A prospect replies "what does this cost?" → high active engagement
- A prospect clicks the pricing link in your sequence → moderate active engagement
- A prospect opens an email → near-zero signal (treat as noise)
