Email List

An email list is the audience for an email program — the contacts you're sending to — and its quality determines campaign performance more than any other single factor.

What is an email list?

An email list is the set of contacts a campaign sends to. In B2B contexts a list is typically built from a combination of inbound captures (forms, downloads), CRM exports, prospecting (research, scraping, enrichment), and partnerships. Lists can be evergreen (newsletter subscribers) or campaign-specific (a one-time outbound push).

Why it matters

  • Targeting beats copy — the best message sent to the wrong list still fails
  • List quality directly drives deliverability; bad lists produce bounces and complaints that wreck sender reputation
  • Compliance hinges on list provenance (where did each contact come from? did they opt in?)

Hygiene per list type

  • Opted-in newsletter: suppress hard bounces, honor unsubscribes, re-engage dormant
  • Cold outbound: verify before send, dedupe, refresh quarterly
  • Re-engagement: segment by last engagement, expect lower deliverability
