Subscription Plan

A subscription plan is the packaged tier — features, limits, support level — sold for a recurring fee, the foundation of every SaaS revenue model.

What is a subscription plan?

A subscription plan is a defined bundle of features, usage limits, and support that customers pay for on a recurring basis (monthly or annual). Most SaaS products offer 2–4 tiers with deliberately different feature gates designed to map to different buyer segments.

Why it matters

  • The atomic unit of pricing strategy and packaging
  • Drives ARPU, expansion potential, and segmentation
  • Gates the upgrade path that creates net revenue retention above 100%

Common plan structures

  • Free tier / freemium — wide top of funnel, conversion via usage limits
  • Self-serve paid — credit card, no sales call, lower ACV
  • Sales-assisted tiers — more features, custom limits, requires conversation
  • Enterprise — bespoke pricing, custom contract, security review

In 2026

  • Usage-based and hybrid (seat + usage) models continue gaining share over pure-seat
  • AI features are driving higher per-seat or pay-per-call pricing components
