Email Sequence

An email sequence is a multi-step series of messages sent over days or weeks to a single prospect, designed to escalate engagement and earn a reply.

What is an email sequence?

An email sequence is the outbound staple: a series of 3–7 messages spaced across 1–4 weeks, each with a different angle, sent to the same prospect. The goal is to earn a reply — positive or negative — and either move the conversation forward or close the loop.

Why it matters

  • A single cold email gets ignored; a thoughtful sequence opens a meaningful share of doors
  • Multi-touch dramatically lifts reply rate vs. one-shot — but only when each touch adds something
  • The sequence is the unit of A/B testing in outbound

What good looks like in 2026

  • 3–4 steps, not 12 — long sequences signal automation and feel desperate
  • At least one channel switch (LinkedIn DM, voice note, phone)
  • Each message earns its own send (new angle, new reason, new value)
  • Auto-pause on reply, on out-of-office, on opt-out
