User Engagement Metrics

User engagement metrics measure how actively users interact with your product or content — sessions, feature usage, time-in-app — and they predict retention, expansion, and PQL conversion.

What are user engagement metrics?

User engagement metrics quantify how actively a user interacts with your product, content, or messaging. Common metrics: DAU/WAU/MAU, sessions per user, key feature adoption, time-in-app, content depth, return frequency. They're the leading indicator for almost every downstream outcome — retention, expansion, churn, PQL conversion.

Why it matters

  • Engagement drops weeks before churn shows up in revenue
  • Expansion candidates surface from engagement patterns
  • PLG companies measure and operate almost entirely from these metrics

What to track

  • Activation: % of new users hitting key first-value milestones
  • Engagement intensity: sessions per active user, key features per session
  • Retention: week-1, week-4, month-6 cohort curves
  • Depth: % of users using more than one or two key features
  • Recency: days since last meaningful action
